History of Hedgcoxe Elementary

Hedgcoxe Elementary School is named after Henry Oliver Hedgcoxe (1800–1860), an English-born land agent for the Peters Colony. In 1852, his efforts to establish land titles led to a conflict with local colonists—an event known as the Hedgcoxe War. This historical connection reflects an important chapter in early North Texas settlement.
Since opening in 1990, with construction costs of nearly $8 million, Hedgcoxe Elementary has developed a strong tradition of academic excellence and community involvement. The school has been recognized by the Texas Education Agency for its high performance and commitment to student achievement.
Hedgcoxe is also known for its innovative and engaging programs that enrich student learning. These include Chez Snoopy, a unique student-run French restaurant led by third graders; a mentorship partnership with Electronic Data Systems (EDS); and a variety of community events such as Night of Giving, Multicultural Night, Family Art Night and the annual Black History Assembly.
The school takes pride in its dedicated staff and strong community connections. Notably, Kelly Bentley—first grade team leader and 2006–2007 Teacher of the Year—is a sixth-generation member of the Hedgcoxe family. The continued involvement of the Hedgcoxe family is a valued part of the school’s history and tradition.
Together, these programs, achievements, and partnerships reflect Hedgcoxe Elementary’s commitment to fostering academic excellence, cultural awareness, and a strong sense of community among its students and families.
