Art
As a first-year Art Teacher at Hedgcoxe Elementary, I’m excited to welcome students to the art room each week for 50 minutes of creative exploration and expression. In class, students build their visual literacy through hands-on experiences that introduce the elements and principles of art, art history, and a variety of 2-D and 3-D materials. We explore cultural connections while encouraging students to observe details, recognize patterns, and develop their own ideas, preferences, and personal styles.
Students also learn about a diverse group of artists—both male and female—from different cultures, time periods, and backgrounds. Through these studies, they gain multiple perspectives over time, discovering how art reflects changing ideas, traditions, and innovations. As an artist myself, I love giving students the freedom to choose the medium that inspires them most, and many enjoy experimenting with multiple materials within a single piece. I remind students often to be kind to one another and to themselves, as we are all learning and growing together as artists and people.
Throughout the year, I integrate Math, Science, History, Geography, and Language Arts into our art lessons to help students see how creativity connects across all subjects. We also create collaborative art projects that bring the entire school community together—these pieces may be displayed in the hallways, featured during school programs, or shared at assemblies. Student artwork is proudly displayed throughout the hallways of Hedgcoxe, and our students have opportunities to share their talents in district and state art displays and contests.
